Located in a natural bay of Black Sea, Batumi is a charming, sunny sea resort loved by many as a perfect summer holiday destination. Locals and visitors alike enjoy endless beaches, strolls along the city’s boulevard, lush green parks and alleys lined with palm trees, cypresses and magnolias and of course delicious local cuisine offered at the many authentic Georgian restaurants.

Things to see and do in Batumi

  • For panoramic views of Batumi and the Black sea, hop onto the Argo Cable Car that will take you to the top of Anuria Mountain, 250 m above the sea level. Once on top, treat yourself to a coffee with a view or visit the small church situated right next to the viewing deck.
  • Go for a long relaxing walk at the Seaside park, also called Boulevard by locals. It stretches for 7 km along the north-western coast of Batumi and has plenty of cafés, playgrounds and a host of various sports and entertainment events.
  • Visit Gonio Fortress – the oldest fortress of Georgia, located 15 km away from Batumi in the village of Gonio, just 4 km south of Turkish border.
  • If you fancy a day at the beach head to Mtsvane Kontskhi. Due to its location, right next to Batumi Botanical Garden, the locals often refer to it as “Green Paradise”. After a day of sunbathing and swimming you can relax in the shade of the park and enjoy the unique flora of more than 2,000 tree species.
  • See the famous moving sculpture Ali and Nino in motion. Every day at 7pm the statue comes to life with two figures moving towards each other to create a single piece just for a moment, before they part again. It’s inspired by the love story of a Muslim boy, Ali, and a Christian girl, Georgian princess, Nino, from a famous 1937 novel by Azerbaijani author Kurban Said.

Tips for travellers

Escape the summer heat with a trip to magnificent Makhuntseti Waterwall in Adjarian mountains just 30 km away from Batumi. After crossing the 9-century Makhuntseti bridge that leads you to the waterfall, you can enjoy a swim in the cool pool or just sit back and have a cup of coffee in the nearby café overlooking the lush greenery of the mountain view.

Batumi is quite a small town which could be explored by foot, as it only takes around 40-50 min to get from one end of town to the other.
Cycling is another option to see the sights, as there are  red painted bike paths throughout the city. You can rent a bike at one of the automated BatumVelo stations along the Boulevard and a few other bike rental points in town.
There is also a developed network of buses and minibuses cruising through town, with bus schedules available at the main fountains.
